1970s-1980s Vintage Fans- fair prices, and how well do they work?
Main Post:
Hello fan enthusiasts of Reddit, I'm in the market for an older fan for my bedroom, no later than the 1980s ideally.
The reason? I've had enough of crappy modern fans that go bad after 2-3 years, and never really work well to begin with.
The two brands I've had my eye on are Tatung and Galaxy (Lasko), preferably a 12" model, and I might consider a 16" model later. If these brands are no good, then what other brands should I be looking at? I know eBay tends to be overpriced at the best of times, but are the fans really as expensive as most sellers are offering? Over $100 USD? If they really work as good as I've heard, then I have no problem spending a little more money to get better performance.
Second, how well do these fans actually work? I've seen some videos of these fans in use, and their owners seem to like them. The 1980s is about the era when it seems like most manufacturers were switching to plastic blades instead of metal ones, and both of the aforementioned makes have translucent plastic blades. Would I be better getting one with metal blades? I would also like something that's somewhat quiet, or at least reasonably quiet so I can use my computer.
Any guidance on this would be very much appreciated.
Top Comment: You chose the perfect era and one of the best brands (Lasko/Galaxy). Those are low maintenance, quiet, and efficient. The plastic used on the blades is very hard, and will shatter if it takes a fall, but they don't warp and decrease airflow over time. The metal fans older than that are great too, but many are fast and loud because we run on 120V instead of the 110V they were designed for. And of course sparse grilles which won't be good around children or pets. $100 is outrageous. Don't forget that eBay search results are all for products that people don't want. If they did, it would be sold. Patience is key. Put it in your saved searches and wait for a cheaper one, then jump on it. Or take enough runs to the thrift store or flea market, you'll stumble across one for $20 or less. But considering that a new fan is about $30 and the old one works much better and will last you much longer, double or triple that price is justifiable.
